Grgich Hills Chardonnay 2018

Miljenko “Mike” Grgich has been called “The King of Chardonnay” since the winery began in 1977, and you can taste why in this classically-styled wine. We did not allow the Chardonnay to undergo malolactic fermentation, preserving its natural acidity. The wine displays crisp Fuji apple, honeydew melon and a hint of cashew nut aromas and avors. A classic Chardonnay, this flavorful yet elegant wine is medium- to full-bodied. Already enjoyable upon release, the wine’s fruit will continue to open up for a few years from harvest; the wine should remain in excellent drinking condition for five to seven years from vintage. Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay 2018

Within Kumeu’s wide range of Chardonnays (after all, this far northern winery has carved its reputation on the variety), its estate wine is the one to go for if drinking young, although it will continue to blossom over the next five to seven years. Exceptionally food-friendly, it offers all the length and class of the upper-tier wines, but with more upfront appeal in the form of bright citrus and pear fruit, white spice and honey. Like with its brethren, the palate stars in the show with texture and acidity striking a graceful balancing act, and with oak taking a back seat. -CP

Hess Select Chardonnay 2018

Monterey’s combination of moderate climate and marine influences from the Pacific Ocean keep the grapes balanced and able to develop fully ripe lavors. A classic Central Coast Chardonnay, this wine offers tropical aromas of grilled pineapple with a hint of lemon zest. Nicely balanced, Hess Chardonnay is medium-bodied with layers of sliced peaches and golden delicious apples, finishing crisp and clean with well-balanced acid. One of the things I enjoy most when I’m visiting with wine drinkers at festivals all around the country is the obvious pleasure people have when they tell me ‘I really love the Hess green label Chardonnay, it’s our house white.’ That means my mission is clear: don’t screw up a good thing. Joseph Faiveley Bourgogne Blanc 2017

A very nice expressive nose has white flower scents. The attack is bold and generous. This wine, which is balanced on the palate, has good volume and quite exceptional long-lasting scents and tastes for this appellation.

Jean Marc Pillot Morgeot Chassagne Montrachet Les Fairendes 1er Cru 2017

(the only one of these 2017s that had been racked and assembled by the time of my visit): Nose muted by a recent second dose of SO2. Broad but light on its feet, with white peach and apple aromas accented by spices and flowers. Not especially fleshy or sweet–or at least it’s not in an opulent phase today. From a 1970 planting. (13.2% natural alcohol)
