Moulin-la Viguerie is a very historic estate. Owner, Gaël Petit’s family has run this estate since around 1900. In fact, his great-great grandpappy, Aimé Roudil was the first president of the Tavel syndicate in 1923 and actually was the key leader in 1936 for getting the region’s appellation status. Gaël took over from his mother in 1992 and is now the president of the Tavel syndicate (circles). They own 15 ha of vineyards in Tavel, in all three major sectors: Olivet, Vallongue and Vestides. Vestides, the majority of vineyards, is a unique terroir. Clay on the top soil and then moves to limestone, giving the grapes here bright fruit and minerality. And that is ABUNDANTLY CLEAR on this wine. 50% Grenache, 30% Cinsault, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre and Bourboulenc and Clairette. 50 year old vines on average. And winemaking is very clean and in cement for the whole ride. Thus, this is a wine that is wonderfully ripe and bright and the texture is just explosive! Crunchy fruit that makes you want to drink the entire bottle.

Combe des Fous literally means, the hill of the fool. The hill, in this case, is located in the far southern reach of Le Crau which was left barren for many centuries because the layer of galets was so exceedingly deep that everyone assumed vines could never survive there. The fool in this situation is Edmund Tacussel, the great-great-grandfather of Vincent and Pascal Maruel who planted a Grenache vineyard on this site in 1905. That old-vine Grenache form the heart of this cuvee with a small amount of Syrah, Cinsault and Vaccarese. – Importer

Small hill in La Crau district where Grenache was planted in 1905. From 50-100+ year old vines. Farming: Sustainable. Aging: Grenache aged in concrete tank, other varieties in French oak for 12 months. This parcel on La Crau called Combe Des Fous was historically considered too difficult to work, yet the Maurels’ great grand-father, Edmond, was fool enough to persevere. From the Hill of Fools comes this extraordinary blend. -Importer

Looking to create a blend that highlighted the differences between grapes grown in the southern Rhône area surrounding Avignon, and those from the more northern region of Vaison-la-Romaine, Kermit Lynch partnered with Jean-François Pasturel of Terres d’Avignon to create the ‘Cypress Cuvée.’ According to Bruce Neyers, the former Director of National Sales at Kermit Lynch, The term Cypress Cuvée was originally suggested by Daniel Brunier, who remarked that this northern, mountainous area of the Côtes du Rhône was given more to cypress trees than to olive trees. Hence, the birth of a cuvée that offers lovers of Rhône-style reds an accessible alternative at an appealing price point. The Côtes du Rhône Rouge “Cypress Cuvée” consists mostly of Grenache, with Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault, and Mourvèdre included in the mix. Vines average 40 years of age and come from a combination of marl and limestone soils. The resulting wine undergoes natural fermentation and aging in cement tanks before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. -Importer

Vine Age: 15 years average. Organic viticulture with absolutely no chemical herbicides, pesticides, or fertilizers, soil is worked regularly by plow and hand-hoes, buds are trimmed and a green harvest is practice to purposefully limit yields; the average yield is between 35-38 hl/ha, all grapes are harvested by hand, and selection takes place in the vineyards instead of on asorting table, grapes are de-stemmed and then pressed gently by pneumatic press. Only indigenous yeasts are used, wines ferment in underground, temperature-controlled, gravity-fed cuves, all wines are unfined and unfiltered. Fermentation lasts for 15-21 days in closed cuve, maceration by pump-over, wine ages in oak foudres for 18 months, aging potential: 30 years. Terrebrune vigneron Reynald Delille seems to be a quiet, reserved man, but a twinkle in his eye appears as soon as he begins pouring samples of his Bandols. Upon seeing his guests’ excitement when tasting his wines, he suddenly becomes eager to provide an in depth explanation of why the wines taste the way they do.
