Bodegas Hermanos de Peciña is firmly planted in the old school camp. Although the estate was started only in 1992, its founder, Pedro Peciña had worked for over 20 years prior to that as the head agronomist for La Rioja Alta, learning all facets of production and especially the planting and managing of all the estate’s vineyards. Bozeto means sketch or outline and as the name implies it is their entry level wine. The wine is a fruity easy drinking introduction to their wines, philosophy and mix of Rioja’s 3 principle grape varieties. A deep red colour, dense and bright in appearance. Aromas of red fruits (cherry and strawberry) with mineral and floral touches. A luscious palate, strawberry and cranberry flavours supply a sweetness that contrasts with the pleasant acidity. A Gran Reserva wine is a Great Work, so we need to start with a base wine that meets special conditions in terms of structure, colour, tannins and aromas. This wine is therefore made with grapes from our oldest vines, from which we obtain very small, highly-concentrated berries, with very low yields and extraordinary quality. Colour: ruby-cherry red, with good depth and amber-orange rim bright, clean. Aromas: fine, intense nose with ripe fruit, toffee and chocolate, reduction with a classic bouquet of leather and tobacco. Bright ruby red color with high layer and little evolved. Very marked aromas of licorice and fruit compote (dried apricots, plums and sour cherries) melt with notes of its passage through the barrel (spices, vanilla and roasted) and a soft dairy background. Long and very large wine with a marked acidity that balances it as a whole. Aftertaste of Prunes and aging aromas, vanilla and toast With a tasty, sweet and mineral finish.

Hermanos De Pecina Gran Reserva 2009

There is one more exceptional red with an extended aging in barrel that was only produced in 1998, 2001 and 2003, and now in this 2009 Señorío de P. Peciña Gran Reserva. It is the usual Tempranillo with 3% Garnacha and 2% Graciano, but in this case from 50-year-old vines from their Finca Iscorta vineyard in the Sonsierra zone. The wine is aged in well-seasoned American oak barrels for four years with manual and gravity racking twice per year. If the nose could somehow remind you of the 2009 Reserva, this is more open and aromatic, more nuanced, and the palate also shows a level of complexity and refinement that makes it much more enjoyable, with polished tannins and great length. While it’s not a wimp, it doesn’t overload your senses. A great and classical Gran Reserva. 15,000 bottles were filled in September 2013. The traditional family winery from San Vicente de la Sonsierra has produced a Rosé in 2015, something they had not done since 2000 (but I didn’t taste it!). They also produced a Gran Reserva in 2009 (which I tasted!)–a category they had only produced in 1998, 2001 and a tiny bit in 2003. Traditionally styled and sensibly priced.

Powerful red wine grown in the sand on the dunes near Sintra on the Atlantic Ocean, mainly made from grapes of the Portuguese variety Joao de Santarem, ( Also know as Castelao) Grown in an area surrounding the Colares DOC, aged and cellared in the same fashion of the Colares wines. Same old Barriques and bottle aging. Dark fruits but with bright acidity and rich notes of leather and spice.
