Domaine Raymond Usseglio Chateauneuf Du Pape Cuvee Girard 2018

The 2018 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Girard hadn’t been blended when I visited the estate last year, so this bottled sample was my first look at the cuvée for the American importer. It closely mirrors the regular bottling, but typically includes a bit more old-vine Grenache. The nose is similar, offering up hints of dried spices, earth and black cherries, but the feel on the full-bodied palate is richer and more enveloping, with a creamy-velvety texture that flows seamlessly onto the long, plush finish.

D’arenberg The Stump Jump Gsm 2017

This wine screams value. A rich ruby red appearance with a fragrant nose of raspberry, a hint of dark cherry and spice. Silky texture on the palate, but with a juicy fruit core that shows plum, red berries, and a savory finish. There are lovely soft tannins and some slight acidity. The fruit weight and silkyness means this wine can be enjoyed now, but it will keep developing over time. with minimal disease pressure and above average crop levels.

Domaine Moulin La Viguerie ‘les Falaises De Braise’ Tavel Rose 2019

Moulin-la Viguerie is a very historic estate. Owner, Gaël Petit’s family has run this estate since around 1900. In fact, his great-great grandpappy, Aimé Roudil was the first president of the Tavel syndicate in 1923 and actually was the key leader in 1936 for getting the region’s appellation status. Gaël took over from his mother in 1992 and is now the president of the Tavel syndicate (circles). They own 15 ha of vineyards in Tavel, in all three major sectors: Olivet, Vallongue and Vestides. Vestides, the majority of vineyards, is a unique terroir. Clay on the top soil and then moves to limestone, giving the grapes here bright fruit and minerality. And that is ABUNDANTLY CLEAR on this wine. 50% Grenache, 30% Cinsault, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre and Bourboulenc and Clairette. 50 year old vines on average. And winemaking is very clean and in cement for the whole ride. Thus, this is a wine that is wonderfully ripe and bright and the texture is just explosive! Crunchy fruit that makes you want to drink the entire bottle.

Booker Oublie Red Paso Robles 2016

A blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre, fermented with roughly 40% Stems, the 2016 Oubile is incredibly primary and has a southern Rhone like profile of black raspberries, peppery spice, and dried herbs. Full-bodied, elegant and silky, with fine tannin, it’s an incredible wine.

Bosquet Des Papes Chateauneuf Du Pape La Folie 2015

A more modern styled cuvée, the 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Folie is 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre that’s all from the pebbly soils of the Mont-Redon lieu-dit, from a parcel called “La Folie”. This cuvée is always completely destemmed and brought up mostly in demi-muids, with 10% in new barrels. Black raspberries, graphite, vanilla oak and hints of violets give way to a medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated red that has plenty of mid-palate depth and present, yet ripe tannin. It’s a beautifully balanced, pleasure-bent effort that will benefit from a year or more of bottle age and keep through 2027. There are a scant 250 cases produced.

Limpid ruby-red. The highly perfumed nose features smoke- and spice-tinged red berries and cherry and picks up a sexy floral nuance with air. Smooth, appealingly sweet and open-knit, offering intense raspberry and cherry pie flavors and subtle lavender and succulent herb flourishes. Smooth tannins lend gentle grip to the floral-tinged finish, which hangs on with strong tenacity.
