Another impressive Oloroso from Gonzalez Byass. This is a sweet, dark, brooding Sherry with prune and other sweet fruit aromas. The palate is rich but has good flow, while dark flavors of dulce de leche and burnt brown sugar are wonderful. Sweet but balanced by mild coffee-like bitterness on the finish.

The new NV Manzanilla Navazos En Rama is the equivalent for the USA of the Manzanilla I Think, destined for markets other than Spain, the UK or Australia. Like the I Think, it is bottled unfined and unfiltered from a solera averaging four to five years of age. It’s younger than the Navazos Pasada or La Bota de bottlings but keeps the character of the Sanlúcar origin. It’s very Florpower with a pungent palate, very much about the soil, direct and vertical. This is sourced from some 60 casks and it filled 2,592 half bottles in May 2017.

This comes across wide and expansive as it lazily exudes oily aromas of hazelnut and toffee. A plump palate is not overly cutting or demanding, while flavors of lightly salted nuts and buttered toast end with toffee and peanut flavors.

Toasted sesame, peanut, almond and hazelnut notes lead the way, followed by a fleshy core of prune and fig paste flavors. Shows a long echo of ganache on the finish. Frankly sweet but with enough tension for balance. Drink now. 12,970 cases made. –JM
