Dow’s Vintage Port 2017

The 2017 was a very different year to 2016 in terms of the viticultural conditions and it was interesting to watch the progression of the wine and scrutinize its quality as it developed over its first two winters. Whereas 2016 had a very mild winter and exceptionally hot summer, this was compensated by abundant winter and spring rainfall. Conversely, 2017 was warm and dry throughout, although summer temperatures were closer to average, which proved to be a very significant factor allowing for complete, balanced ripening. It is rare to see such tremendous depth and intensity in color as this wine displays. The freshness of the floral aromas is very attractive with a dominance of rockrose, a flower that grows wild around the hills of Senhorada Ribeira. On the palate, it is exceptionally full-bodied, rich and powerful with black fruit coming to the fore. Gorgeous, ripe fruit is balanced by the fine tannin structure. On the finish, it is typically Dow,austere and somewhat drier than many other ports. The intense fruit flavors linger long on the palate. – Port House

Casal De Ventozela Rodrigo 2018

Hand harvest, de-stemmed, fermentation in 5 and 10 ton stainless steel tanks, then matured, 70% in stainless steel and 30% in 225L 3rd and 4th year 225L barrique for 16 months prior to the final blending. Lightly fined and filtered. Minimal SO2. A long-time friendship with Quevedo, a family owned port house with deep roots in the region, led to a partnership for Rodrigo. Fruit is sourced from the family’s 27 ha of vines located around 450 meters at the edge of the Cima-Corgo and Duoro Superior. -Winery

Quinta De Roriz Prazo De Roriz Douro Red 2017

The hand-picked grapes for Prazo de Roriz are placed in small, shallow containers and on arrival at the Quinta de Roriz winery the bunches are manually sorted, after which the berries undergo an automated selection process to ensure that only grapes in ideal condition reach the stainless steel vats. Following gentle crushing, fermentation is induced through inoculation with a specially selected yeast culture and proceeds at temperatures between 22 and 24°C. Gentle macerations are favoured in order to produce fresh and fruity wines, approachable from a young age whilst retaining good ageing potential.- Winery

Wine And Soul Pintas Character 2017

Pintas Character is made from a field blend of 30 different varieties from the 45-year old Vale de Mendiz vineyard adjacent to the 85-year old Pintas vineyard. Some of the varieties are the indigenous Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Touriga Nacional. The wine is fermented in traditional granite lagares and aged for 18 months in 50% new and 50% second-passage French oak barriques. Rich and powerful, this wine shows notes of raspberry, black cherry and plums. On the palate it is fresh and velvety with well integrated tannins and a long, persistent finish

Niepoort Bioma Vintage Port 2016

A concentrated, almost dark purple colour, with aromas of black pepper, spice and dark fruits such as plums and blackberries. Initially the palate is fresh with superb acidity and a wonderful expression of dark fruits, but follows through to a bold tannic mid-palate and finish, the sweetness and fruit very much dominated by tannin on the finish. This is a Port wine suitable for long cellaring. – Winery
